An Insight into Tom Ansell Art

There are certain things that have always fascinated me - existence, life, death, nature, creation -- and it took me a long time before I knew I wanted to explore these things visually.

My work started out exploring often pastiche composites from fantasy artwork and Warhammer-inspired works, painted with grizzly detail and often particular textures.

Through my formal study, I found my own visual voice - a similarly detailed and texture-obsessed grit that foreshadowed my understanding of form & dimensionality. It wasn't until my post-graduate studies in 2016 that I decided to correct this with an increasing interest in life-drawing using myself as the main subject matter. Consequentially, this also led into an increasing interest in public artwork.

The culmination of my academic studies led to a new direction in exploring public art as a new way of communicating with people on a grander scale. 2016 was the year my first collaborative public artwork, The Rescue, was opened, and my first mural, Sister Cities, was executed.

Since this time, I have upskilled my art even further, and now my aim is to explore the possibilities murals have to both transport people and transform spaces. The latent power images have to transfigure not just minds, but the spaces they exist in is my current motive for creating murals full-time. I am both excited and shaken by this possibility, as I do not know if there exist any limitations to how far one can push a mural, or the capacity to add value and meaning to peoples' lives through art. Perhaps it is limitless. That's what I'm here to find out.
