Dark Landscapes and Charcoal

Hi Everyone,

I know it has been quite a while between this post and the last – apologies for this.

There is a reason why this is so. Primarily, I've been dividing my time between drawing studies at Watts Atelier and doing some landscape painting. The drawing itself is all done in charcoal and as such has been good for me, considering I never really explored its full potential before now. As you will see, the drawings themselves are very linear but also structural.

In the interim between daily drawing sessions, there has been time set aside for painting and colour. Initially when I decided to first study at Watts Atelier, I denied myself the chance to paint until I learnt traditional techniques. In the last few months, I've come to think that was counter-productive and made me feel limited. Anyway.

This new work follows on from the last large landscape, Dark Valley (2019), which I completed back in late April this year. This new piece is inspired by Dark Valley II, although has now deviated away from it and became its own landscape, rather than just a copy.

Eventually, I will list Dark Valley V on the website and create prints. As for the drawings, most of these are master studies from the instructors at Watts Atelier; in this regard, I won't be selling or making prints of these.

Thanks for stopping by.

Tom.
